32soil_monoliths

A reminder that we were on a soils field trip. This display has a variety of miniature soil samples (called monoliths by those in the know) from different regions of Thailand (as depicted in the cross section along the bottom of the display). The monoliths are meant to represent the different soil types and different vertical horizons as if they were taken from the ground. Real soil is used to create the monoliths. Larger, life-size versions of these actually take direct samples from the sides of a soil pit using a special glue.
